Chapter 8

Natural heat fell onto my face from my bedroom window, and my eyes opened to an empty bed and an empty room. Alexis was still asleep in on the kitchen floor, her leg propped and the blanket on her chest moving up and down; not alarmingly slow or too quickly.  She could always sense when I was looking at her, and her eyelids raised to greet mine. What the fuck did I get into. She said it in a playful way, and nearly looking forward to the attention I’d be expected into giving her. My going out by moonrise and returning at sunset would be suspended; the reaper’s scythe would be leaned against the wall by the coat hanger next to the umbrellas on the door for a few weeks. I saw the fire return to her eyes, and I regret believing the possibly of ridding the world of vermin would be worth the life of a beautiful being.  Well girl, apparently the people I was going to kill last night didn’t think much of their parole and shot you in the leg.
